How it works
What is a revocable living trust?
A revocable living trust is a legal arrangement you create during your lifetime. You transfer your assets into the trust and typically serve as your own trustee, so you keep full control — you can change or revoke it at any time.
If you become incapacitated or pass away, the successor trustee you chose manages and distributes the trust’s assets according to your instructions, generally without a court-supervised probate.
Benefits
- Assets properly titled in the trust avoid probate
- Keeps your plan and asset details more private
- Built-in plan for incapacity
- Can be changed as your life changes
Things to understand
- The trust only controls assets that are transferred into it
- A pour-over will is still needed as a safety net
- A revocable trust doesn’t, on its own, reduce taxes or shield assets from your creditors
